Thank you for your interest in becoming a volunteer for
Community Health Professionals. As a nonprofit agency, volunteers play a very
important role in our meeting the needs of our patients and their families.
We have several volunteer opportunities available from working directly with
patients to helping in our office and participating in fundraising events. The
following information is designed to outline the various volunteer activities
that we offer so that you may choose an area which best suits your needs and
abilities.
Thank you for your interest and we look forward to working with you in meeting the needs of others in our community.
Hospice:
The volunteer, who goes into the home of a family facing terminal illness provides both the patient and the family with a friend they can count on for those small, but important daily needs. The lay volunteer is a person with whom it is easy to identify and relate. The volunteer, by forming a close, affectionate relationship, can maintain or reestablish the patient’s sense of self-worth and give family members increased freedom to live a more normal daily life.
Home health:
From time to time, we are asked for volunteers to sit with patients who not terminally ill, but who need some contact with other people. These people may have Alzheimer’s disease, be blind, or have some other condition that is not life-threatening. Most are simply elderly people who are homebound.
flu shot clinics:
Beginning in October and running through the first or second week in November, our agency offers flu shots to the public. We use volunteers at the scheduled sites to help the nurses do the necessary paperwork for the clients receiving the shots. Volunteers can choose to work specific dates and locations for these clinics.
adult Day care:
Our Adult Day Care Center offers respite to family members of elderly or confused patients on a daily or occasional basis. Since, Community Health Professionals, Inc. is a non-profit agency; we rely upon the help of volunteers to staff the day care center to defray costs of our clients.
As a volunteer at the Adult Day Care Center , you can help serve meals, read to clients, supervise board or memory games, or provide special programs such as: arts and crafts on a regular basis.
angel foundation:
While there are several agencies that grant wishes of terminally ill children, our Angel Foundation is one of only two agencies nationally that grant wishes of terminally ill adults.
As a volunteer for this program, you would work "behind the scenes" in putting the patient’s wish together; either by being a support person for the office staff, or taking part in making contacts with other agencies in making sure that wish comes true.
behind the scenes:
If you are more comfortable doing things behind the scenes, we have many opportunities to offer you. For example:
© Office Work: paper work, filing, folding, etc. © Helping staff put together events
© Helping with Fundraising Events © Sending greeting cards to patients
© Participating in Community Events © Making crafts, bake sales, auctions, etc.
family caring clinic:
The Family Caring Clinic provides health care services to individuals and families with limited resources to obtain basic health care. A volunteer can assist with paperwork, answering phones, scheduling appointments, putting informational packets together and other clerical duties.
Help me grow:
Help Me Grow program offers many services for families pre-natal to age three including newborn home visits, ongoing home visits and help for families that have children with development delays.
Two monthly meetings are held for families involved with Help Me Grow, in order to provide proper care and structure in their upbringing. Volunteers help care for children at these meetings to allow the Family Support Specialist time to meet with the parents and address their concerns. Other opportunities consist of putting informational packets together and making newborn baskets.
Women Infants & Children (WIC):
WIC is a nutrition education program. WIC provides nutritious foods which promote good health for pregnant women, women who just had a baby, breastfeeding moms, infants, and children up to age five. WIC provides services to many people and can use the assistance of volunteers in answering phones and scheduling appointments, as well as performing many various clerical duties.
grant programs:
Vocational Training & Placement coordinates programs for youth who are school dropouts, basic skills deficient, runaway, pregnant, offender or need assistance to complete an education program or to secure and remain employed. This is accomplished through tutoring, dropout prevention, alternative education, and work experience guidance and counseling, occupational skill training, leadership development, supportive services and mentoring and follow-up services. The program is for youth, ages 14 to 21. To qualify, an individual must be at or below an income level of 100% of the federal poverty level, receiving cash assistance, homeless, disabled and meets the income requirement on their own.
